Junona Gate — Buffer Zone Safari in Tadoba Andhari National Park
Experience Tadoba at its most serene — fewer jeeps, flexible permits, and the same magnificent wildlife. Junona Gate is the hidden gem of Tadoba's safari circuit.
About the Gate
Junona Gate — Tadoba's Peaceful Buffer Safari
Located approximately 35 km from Chandrapur on the western edge of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Junona Gate is a buffer zone entry point that offers an intimate, unhurried safari experience. Unlike the busier core zone gates like Moharli or Kolara, Junona sees significantly fewer vehicles, creating a more authentic wildlife encounter.
The Junona buffer zone spans a mosaic of dense teak and bamboo forest interspersed with open meadows and seasonal water bodies. This landscape creates ideal habitat for the full range of Tadoba's wildlife — from tigers and leopards to gaur, sambar, and an extraordinary variety of birds.
The gate infrastructure has been progressively upgraded, with a comfortable reception area, permit counters, and well-maintained forest tracks. A dedicated forest department team manages tiger monitoring and wildlife protection in this zone year-round.
Understanding Zones
Buffer Zone vs Core Zone Safari — What's the Difference?
Buffer Zone (Junona)
- ✓Easier permit availability — often last-minute bookings possible
- ✓Fewer vehicles per safari slot — more exclusive experience
- ✓Longer safari duration allowed (up to 4 hours vs 3 hours)
- ✓Lower permit costs than core zone
- ✓Tigers, leopards, and all wildlife regularly sighted
- ~Slightly lower tiger density than peak core zones
Core Zone (Moharli/Kolara)
- ✓Higher tiger density and more frequent sightings
- ✓Famous tiger territories like Maya and Choti Tara
- ✓More established water holes and meadow clearings
- ✗Permits book out weeks in advance
- ✗More vehicles (can feel crowded at sighting spots)
- ✗Higher permit costs
Pro Tip: Combine both zones for the best experience — book a Junona buffer safari AND a Moharli core zone safari for a complete Tadoba experience across 2–3 days.
Wildlife Encounters
Wildlife at Junona Gate, Tadoba
The Junona buffer zone shelters the full complement of Tadoba's magnificent wildlife. Here's what you can expect to encounter.
Bengal Tiger
Several tigers regularly patrol the Junona buffer zone. The area is part of the territory of known tigers that move between the buffer and core areas. Sighting frequency is high during summer near water bodies.
Indian Leopard
Leopards thrive in the buffer zone's mixed forest cover. Unlike tigers, they are more comfortable near human settlements and can be spotted at dusk near the forest edge. Junona's rocky terrain is prime leopard habitat.
Gaur (Indian Bison)
The largest bovine in the world — gaur herds of 20–30 individuals are a spectacular sight in Junona's meadows. Best spotted in early morning when they graze in open grassland clearings along the forest tracks.
Sambar & Spotted Deer
Sambar deer and chital (spotted deer) are extremely abundant in Junona, forming the primary prey base for tigers and leopards. Their alarm calls are invaluable for locating big cats in the dense forest undergrowth.
Sloth Bear
Sloth bears inhabit the rocky outcrops and fig tree groves of the Junona buffer zone. They are most active at dawn and dusk. March–May when mahua flowers bloom is the best time for sloth bear encounters as they feed voraciously.
Mugger Crocodile & Birds
Mugger crocodiles bask on the banks of seasonal pools and the Irai backwaters. The Junona zone is also a birdwatcher's paradise — over 195 species recorded including Crested Serpent Eagle, Indian Pitta, and Malabar Pied Hornbill.
Safari Schedule
Junona Gate Safari Timings & Slots
The most productive safari slot. Animals are active, light is beautiful, and the forest is alive with birdsong. Tiger sightings are most common in the first 2 hours after sunrise.
Animals emerge from afternoon shade to drink at water holes. Excellent for leopard sightings in the golden evening light. The forest comes alive with activity in the last 90 minutes before sunset.
Easier Permit Availability at Junona
Unlike Moharli and Kolara core zones which book out 30–90 days in advance, Junona buffer zone permits are often available within 7–14 days. Last-minute bookings (2–5 days ahead) are possible during off-peak season (November–February).
Safari Vehicles
Jeep & Canter Safari at Junona Gate
🚙 Jeep Safari (Recommended)
A private jeep safari at Junona gives you maximum flexibility — you control the route, the pace, and the stops. With just 6 passengers per jeep, the experience is intimate and exclusive. Your naturalist guide can take you to the best tiger tracking points based on fresh pugmark evidence.
🚠Canter Safari (Budget Option)
A shared canter (large open vehicle) carries up to 20 passengers along fixed forest routes. This is a more affordable option for solo travellers or those on a budget. The elevated seating gives excellent viewing angles but offers less route flexibility than a private jeep.

Authentic Forest Experience
The Junona buffer zone feels more raw and undiscovered. Fewer tourist facilities near the gate means the forest retains a wilder character — ideal for those seeking genuine wilderness immersion.
