Park Location

Tadoba Location Overview

Tadoba Andhari National Park — officially known as Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) — is nestled in the dense Vidarbha forests of Chandrapur district in eastern Maharashtra, India. The reserve derives its name from the Tadoba River, which flows through the park, and the Andhari River, which forms its southern boundary.

Established as a national park in 1955, Tadoba is Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park. It spans an impressive 625.4 sq km of core zone, with a surrounding buffer zone of 1,101 sq km — making the total tiger reserve area approximately 1,727 sq km of protected wilderness.

The park sits at an elevation between 200 and 350 meters above sea level within the Deccan Plateau ecosystem. Its strategic location at the junction of the Satpura-Maikal and Eastern Ghats wildlife corridors makes it one of India's most biodiverse protected areas.

Why This Location

Why Tadoba's Remote Location is an Advantage

Tadoba's location in the relatively undisturbed Vidarbha region — away from major metropolitan centers — is precisely what makes it so extraordinary. The remoteness has protected the park from urban encroachment and kept human-wildlife conflict at manageable levels.

✦

Minimal Light Pollution

Far from city lights, Tadoba offers spectacular stargazing — the Milky Way is visible on clear nights, making evening stays at jungle lodges unforgettable.

✦

High Tiger Density

With over 88 tigers across 1,727 sq km, Tadoba's relatively compact tiger reserve means significantly higher sighting rates than most larger tiger reserves in India.

✦

Undisturbed Ecosystem

The Vidarbha forests have remained largely intact due to the region's geology and governance, preserving pristine teak forests and grasslands ideal for predator habitats.

✦

Wildlife Corridor Hub

Tadoba sits at the intersection of two major tiger corridors — providing access to genetically diverse tiger populations and ensuring the long-term health of the tiger reserve.
